Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the use of role playing in improving the speaking skills of class VIII C students of MTs Annur Palangka Raya. This research uses quantitative and qualitative approaches (mix method) of the sequental explanatory type. This type of experimental research and descriptive analysis. The research sample was class VIII B (control class) totaling 22 students and class VIII C (experimental class) totaling 21 students. The results showed 1) The average value of the control class at the pretest was 57.22 and the posttest was 61.35. This shows an increase in student learning outcomes without using role play of 4.13. 2) The results of the experimental class mean score at the pretest was 51.59 and the posttest score for the experimental class was 47.62, indicating a decrease in student learning outcomes by 3.97. This is due to several factors, including low knowledge of Arabic, lack of motivation, environment and the state of the Covid-19 pandemic, students are not fluent in reading the Al-Qur'an, lack of mufradat, and lack of confidence. 3) The results of the Mann Whitney test have a significance value of 0.000 <0.05, so it can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the learning outcomes of the control and experimental class students. Because the highest average score is the control class posttest, the role playing method is not effective in improving speaking proficiency in class VIII C students of MTs Annur Palangka Raya.
